Is Ottawa really a “dull” city?

Sally asked:

I have read in a few books/articles that Ottawa is considered a dull city to visit. Is this true? I am thinking about living an Canada for a while and Ottawa seems like a good choice as I would love to live in Montreal but my french isn’t good enough, and as Ottawa is on the border of Ontario and Quebec it seems like a good base. Is there a good nightlife/culture in Ottawa? Is there good parks, museums, shopping in Ottawa? Should I consider Toronto instead?
Thanks!

Ottawa is a great city! Tons of young students, beautiful museums and galleries, a pretty good night life (try Zaphods in the Market if you want to see some good shows…). It’s a lot smaller than Mtl or Toronto, but it’s charming all the same.

ps: Montreal is a bubble of bilingualism in Quebec, so don’t let your lack of french stop you from experiencing this amazing city! There are tons of Anglophones (some really know no french at all!) living there happily with no language-related problems. Heck, it couldn’t hurt to learn a bit of your nation’s other langue officielle eh?

I’ve lived in and around the Ottawa / Eastern Ontario area for a long time now and Ottawa really is the town that fun forgot. There are a few high spots in the city but they are still stuck where they were 20 plus years ago the world has moved on but Ottawa hasn’t.

I lived in Ottawa for a summer once. It has as much traffic at 10 PM on a Saturday night as Toronto at 1 AM.
Is there a good nightlife/culture in Ottawa? I am sure there must be some.
Yes I think Toronto is a better choice

Whether a place is “dull” or not depends entirely on what you decide it will be. If you rely on outside sources to amuse you then you may find Ottawa rather staid. However, if you make the decision to enjoy the city then you will find lots to entertain you. Trust me, especially if you like to walk as our buses are on strike…still!!
